Abstract

This article examines the necessity and significance of organizing collective ijtihad in Pakistan in order to address contemporary challenges faced by Muslim societies. Islam, as a complete and final religion, possesses the capacity to guide humanity in every era. One of the fundamental reasons for this universality is the principle of ijtihad, through which solutions to newly emerging issues can be derived from the Qur’an and Sunnah in the light of the objectives of Shariah. In the modern world, rapid developments in various fields of life have created complex issues that can no longer be adequately resolved through individual ijtihad alone. Contemporary economic systems, bioethical questions, technological advancements, digital finance, and global social transformations require a collaborative approach in which scholars of Islamic jurisprudence, hadith, legal theory, and experts in modern disciplines collectively deliberate to derive appropriate rulings. In this context, collective ijtihad emerges as a reliable and effective mechanism that broadens scholarly insight and minimizes the possibility of individual error. The study also highlights the historical foundations of collective ijtihad, tracing its roots to the consultative practices of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which were later continued by the Rightly Guided Caliphs and subsequent jurists. The scholarly circles of great jurists such as Imam Abu Hanifa further demonstrate the practical application of collaborative legal reasoning in Islamic intellectual history. Within the Pakistani context, the issue becomes even more significant due to the existence of multiple fatwa institutions, differences in legal opinions, limited engagement with contemporary disciplines, and an excessive reliance on transmitted rulings rather than renewed juristic analysis. The article concludes that establishing a structured and institutional framework for collective ijtihad in Pakistan can strengthen juristic research, provide comprehensive guidance on modern issues, and promote intellectual harmony within the Muslim community.
